Welcome to the Washington DC QUEER Tango Collective
Organized by LGBTQ+ tango dancers and allies in the Washington, DC area, the DC Queer Tango Collective strives to create queer-centered spaces for learning and dancing social tango, for connecting and sharing with each other, and for building and nurturing our communities. All of our events are free of charge. Everyone is welcome in our spaces, as we acknowledge, respect, and celebrate the full rainbow of gender identity and expression. We explore the joys of tango dancing without preconceptions about gender or gender-based roles.
We have a Fall filled with exciting queer tango programming. A detailed schedule of Fall activities is set out below. Do try to get to as many of these as you can—we are working on some prizes for the people who attend the most sessions! Except where otherwise noted, everything takes place at MC's Cultural Arts Center, 7995 Georgia Avenue, Silver Spring, MD. Beginner Guided Practica Series - "Going from Beginner Series to Milonga Floor!"
In October, we will have three weekly guided practica sessions in the first hour and a half of our time before the typical open practica session. These Beginner Guided Practica sessions are designed for people who have completed our beginner series, with the goal of reinforcing/practicing steps learned in the beginners' class, gaining experience on the social dance floor, and learning to have fun even with basic beginner moves. The Beginners Guided Practice will not add new material. One or two members of the organizer team will be there during each Beginner Guided Practica as a resource to help people navigate challenges they are having and will curate some themes for portions of the structured session designed to help everyone get comfortable with elements of the social dance floor, practice specific concepts from the beginner series and introduce fun / whimsy / joy into the dance!
For folks interested in introducing friends to queer tango, these sessions will be a great opportunity to do so. There will be experienced dancers happy to show newcomers some of the basic tango steps, and to welcome them to our wonderful community.
Intermediate Series
We are planning a 4-week series for intermediate level dancers, with Olga Liapis-Muzzy and Jose Otero. Be on the lookout for details about specific content, which is currently in the works. The four classes of the Intermediate Series will take place Nov. 7 and 14th, and Dec. 5 and 12. The classes are free, though registration will be required—registration information to come. In contrast with the Beginners' Guided Practica sessions which are designed to just focus on the concepts from the beginner series, the intermediate series will add new dance vocabulary building on those beginner series concepts. For folks who just completed our beginner series, these Beginners Guided Practicas in October are a great way to get comfort with the beginner concepts ahead of the Intermediate Series in November.
The Collective’s Be Here Queer! Pride Celebration Milonga June 13th was a big success!
The DC Queer Tango Collective thanks everyone who participated and contributed to a very successful DC Queer Tango Weekend 2026! We had more than 85 participants in four dance workshops! During Friday night's dinner, more than 40 people engaged in lively discussion on building teaching capacity within the queer tango community, followed by a very fun tango sing along. Saturday night, our Be Here Queer! Pride Celebration Milonga was attended by a crowd of more than 60 people! We are especially proud of the diversity of people that came together over the weekend to learn and enjoy tango dancing and to share in the celebration.
All of this would not have been possible without the support and assistance of many. Special thanks to the facility managers and staff at Montgomery College (MC)’s Cultural Arts Center, the folks at METZ catering, and the Faculty and Administrative Assistant at MC’s Department of Visual and Performing Arts. Your unwavering support (often behind the scenes) was instrumental to our success. Finally, a big shout out to MC’s Arts Institute, whose funding allowed us to fairly compensate the excellent teachers and DJs.
In short, this event was a resounding success. Thank you all! Viva queer tango!!!

WEEKLY QUEER TANGO PRÁCTICAS
We meet every week on Saturday afternoon for a tango guided práctica. The prácticas are always free of charge and beginners are welcome, with more experienced dancers available to assist and guide newcomers. The practicas are held at the Dance Studio of Montgomery College Takoma Park Campus, located at 7995 Georgia Avenue, Silver Spring, Maryland. The closest Metro station is Silver Spring on the Red Line, which is a 15-20 minute walk from the Campus.
Typically the first hour and a half every Saturday (130pm to 3pm) is devoted to a queer tango class for beginners with little or no experience tango dancing. The rest of the time (until 430pm or 5pm), we play tango music for practice, open to all dancers and dancers from the community at large. From time to time we hold special workshops during this time period. NOTE: We do NOT meet whenever the College is closed (such as during the year end holidays). Please check the calendar below or the Capital Tangueros Calendar to find out about any cancellations.
We host queer milongas (tango dance parties) from time to time in the DC area. All free of charge. Beginners welcome!
